About Me (and my stories!)
About Me (and my stories!)
Hi! I'm Via Goode. (Yes, that's my real name.)
I'm a storyteller, not a story-reader. That means I perform the stories (or, as one 4-year-old listener remarked, "Mommy, she didn't have any books; she WAS the story!"). Some of my stories are based on folklore and some are original stories, developed specifically for my audience -- which tends to consist of mostly children (although I often perform for adult audiences, too!). All stories are performed live, and typically include simple props, character voices, and often songs. And all stories are entertaining, age appropriate, and engaging -- I encourage active participation by the audience!
I am considered an "in-house" field trip and am available anytime during the school year, AS WELL AS for winter, spring, and summer breaks/camps! If your school group would like me to perform stories centered on specific themes, I am happy to try to accommodate your requests, while emphasizing a variety of core learning standards,
including patterns, sequencing, rhyming, context clues, and much more (shhhhh . . . don't tell 'em they're learning!).
In addition to performing at schools, I love to perform at scout meetings, public libraries and museums, festivals, parks, and other special events.
My background includes being an assistant director of children's ministry, a certified Chesapeake Public Schools substitute teacher, and a former preschool teacher and teacher's aide. I have also been the co-leader of a Girl Scout troop, the "room mom" for my daughter's class, and the "team mom" for her soccer, basketball, and softball teams. I'm telling you this because I want you to know that I'm around children A LOT. I think children are funny and inspiring. I also believe that we can learn a lot from them, if we'll listen!
I was honored to be named Young Audiences of Virginia's 2015 Teaching Artist of the Year! I am also a member of the National Storytelling Network, the Virginia Storytelling Alliance, and Professional Storytelling, as well as NAEYC and affiliates. As a member of these organizations, I believe (as they do) " . . . that storytelling is a unique and powerful performing art. Utilizing both humor and pathos, it engages the emotions, the imagination and the intellect of people of all ages. Storytellers serve as agents of positive change in the world."
I enjoy helping my audience utilize their imaginations, and I endeavor to teach them to find "their voice".
My company is based on the belief that my customers' needs are of the utmost importance. I am committed to meeting those needs. As a result, currently more than half of my business each year is from repeat customers and referrals.
